Although this book could probably apply to all types of music, it is tailored towards mastering dance music, since that is the music I produce. Now, what is the purpose of me writing this book? Well as it happens, I get a lot of beginner producers sending me their music to critique and feedback, and I also get questions on mastering. Rather than me replying on forums and in emails time and time again I thought I would put together this eBook which will explain some of the techniques I go about using when mastering.
As I state in the first page of the book, there really is no substitute for sending your music into a professional, and I am by no means a professional mastering engineer. People go to schools for years and learn all the professor stuff BUT in this day and age where so many people are producing, mixing and mastering their own music then it pays to at least learn something about this stage of music production.
I know there is an abundance of mastering information out there, so rather than bombard people with all the science behind mastering I thought I would go ahead and create a little step by step guide which results in a 'mastering template'. Obviously there is more than one way to skin a cat, and everyone does their own version of mastering different, but what is offered in this book will act as a good starting point for those amongst us who are only just starting, or maybe even if you aren't starting this book might give you some extra little ideas.
I run through some of the plugins I like to use for compression, Eqing, Limiting etc and in what order and some other little things I do. The outcome is basically my starting point or as I have saved it 'mastering template'. I use this template as my foundation when mastering any of my final mixes. This in turn increases productivity because I found myself doing similar things each time I was mastering, such as some mid/side EQing or similar use of the harmonic exciter.
Obviously this book is not a 'how to master' or what you should be doing. It is not gospel. This book is merely a guide that will hopefully help some of you guys out there. Implement the tools I use and then forge your own techniques to accomplish what works best for you.
You can grab the eBook for free here: http://www.midgeofficial.com/ebooks-and-guides.html
If anyone has issues with downloading it just fire me a message through email or on soundcloud or something.
if anyone does take the approach I use when mastering, id be happy to listen to your results and feedback.
Also in future I will be releasing a production guide with plenty of information in there!
